Hong Kong Marine Life Stranding and Education Centre
In most stranding cases, the cause of death can only be confirmed about 10% of the time as carcasses are usually quite severely decomposed. The Hong Kong Marine Life Stranding and Education Centre (HKMLSEC) held its grand opening on 2 September 2019 to spearhead OPCFHK’s investigations and research. Funded by the HSBC 150th Anniversary Charity Programme, this is the first full-scale necropsy, virtopsy, research and education facility in Asia that offers all-round analysis of injury and death in marine life. Equipped with comprehensive, advanced facilities including a histopathology examination laboratory, CT scanning facilities and necropsy area, it will produce data-driven insights for future monitoring and conservation efforts. A virtual data library enables it to share specimens and samples with external and overseas experts. As part of its efforts to educate the public on marine life stranding, OPCFHK offers free monthly guided tours that give a closer look at marine life conservation and its stranding response operations. Participants are then encouraged to share a conservation hashtag on their Facebook at the end of the tour.
Throughout our history, HSBC has committed itself to contributing to the long-term prosperity of our communities. The partnership with OPCFHK on HKMLSEC marked a significant milestone in supporting the conservation of biodiversity in Hong Kong. The project fills the gaps of current marine standing research and strengthens the training and research capabilities of the Ocean Park Veterinary Centre. Through meaningful collaborations such as these, we hope to enable future solutions for climate challenges.
During last year’s internship, I participated in all kinds of scientific research and education work. What impressed me most was the dolphin strandings in Hong Kong. Whenever there’s a report, the team must drop everything and attend the scene as soon as possible. Even so, they never minded nor complained which really amazed me and gained my respect. This also reminded me to always pay attention to ocean pollution. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn with this organisation. I had a great time with everyone!
