A Critical Indicator Species of Marine Health
As an apex predator, the Chinese white dolphin plays a critical role in maintaining the ecology of its marine habitat. The long-term decline of this species’ population due to human activities is therefore a strong signal that the health of the ocean lies in peril. OPCFHK has played a role in researching the conservation of Chinese white dolphins since its establishment in 1995, a persistent effort that continued through 2019/20 and beyond.
Project 1:
Assessment of Primary Anthropogenic Stressors in Lingding Bay Continuing an on-going photo-ID survey programme that started in 2010, this study aims to quantify the impact of human activities on the declining survival rate of adult Chinese white dolphins in the bay. It collects demographic data on the species’ population while mapping major anthropogenic stressors such as fishing activity, fishery resources, marine transportation and pollutants.
I have had the pleasure of working with OPCFHK on many levels in the past, both as a beneficiary and a reviewer of their funding programme. As a reviewer, I was privileged with insights into the wide spectrum of marine conservation and research supported by OPCFHK in Asia, witnessing first hand their dedication in selecting the most impactful of these. As a beneficiary, we are grateful for their past support, which allowed us to kickstart one of BLOOM HK’s most important projects in understanding local marine biodiversity.
