Wild Species Population Restoration
In the West Visayas region of the Philippines, many animal species face the risk of extinction due to habitat loss, poaching and deforestation. Current captive breeding programmes have helped restore some of these populations to the point where they can be reintroduced into the wild. Part of the ground-breaking progress in this field includes an OPCFHK-sponsored survey—the first of its kind for the region and the country’s largest effort to date—to identify and select soft release sites for the successful reintroduction of several West Visayas species within the Danapa Nature Reserve.
Restoring a Species through Ecology, Community and Conservation
A vital step in population restoration projects is surveying the release site for habitat suitability. This is achieved by using camera traps to identify the area’s existing biodiversity and anthropogenic threats. The research team also consults with local communities around the site to encourage their participation and support, and ensure that the released animals will be safe after reintroduction. The survey helps the research team identify appropriate locations to build soft-release enclosures, which are known to improve animal survival rates and simultaneously, improve the habitat’s overall quality through native reforestation.
I’m very delighted to have witnessed the birth and growth of OPCFHK over the past 25 years. Congratulations to OPCFHK for making marvellous contributions to biodiversity conservation in Hong Kong and Asia. Thanks to the support from Ocean Park and generous donors, OPCFHK was able to fund over 500 conservation research projects in the region, covering over 200 species. Along the way, OPCFHK sponsored almost 420 university students to take part in conservation projects throughout Asia, and many of them have gone on to work as conservationists in academia, government or green NGOs, propagating the impacts.
